A Guide To Resin Surface Installation

A Quick Guide To Stop You Getting Your Resin Surface Installation Wrong

Before we get into the crux of the matter, the easiest and quickest way to avoid any negative ‘issues’ arising when having your Resin Bound Surface installed, is to use an Accredited Contractor.

We’ve all heard the saying, ‘Pay Cheap, Pay Twice’ and generally it’s true.

When you’ve made the decision to turn your dated driveway into your dream driveway, you need to make sure it’s money well spent, and you won’t be left with a whole different nightmare to look out on.

Don’t get caught out in the rain!

As we move towards the winter months one of the questions we’re asked most frequently, is whether Resin Bound Systems can be laid in any weather. The quick answer is a resounding “No”. And if you’re told otherwise, beware!

The rise in popularity of Resin Bound surfacing continues to bring out cowboy builders in force. At StoneSet, we hear horror stories every day, and it’s far too easy to get caught out in the rain.

When laying Resin Bound Surfaces the weather plays a major part. Rain, sleet, snow, and even humidity present all sorts of hazards that you don’t need when dealing with Resin Bound.

If your site isn’t dry, your Resin Bound surface isn’t going down (today)

At StoneSet we’ve seen the result of what happens when moisture and resin react together; gas bubbles are created, which ‘bloom’ to leave a cloudy or foam-like appearance within the resin. It’s NOT a great look.

It’s certainly NOT what you’ve paid for and any tradesperson worth their resin knows it. The system will fail! It’s crucial that moisture is avoided at all costs.

And that’s why we might have to postpone your installation for a day or two because we’re experts. We know what we’re doing, and we know that it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Another point to note is that air temperature will also affect the curing time and therefore the result. As the resin heats up it becomes harder to manipulate, and even with the most skilled installers, achieving a smooth finish is nigh on impossible in the temperatures we’ve seen in 2022.

So, when your accredited contractor tells you they’ll have to delay, it’s not because they’re keen to get their shorts on and relax in the sunshine with a brew, it’s because they want the very best for you and your new driveway.

On the flip side, when the weather turns cold the surface will take longer to cure. Your approved contractor will be able to advise if a catalyst is required and will give you any special guidance.

At StoneSet we always advise our customers to get more than one quote when considering a major purchase (residential or commercial).

Do yourself a favour. Before going through the quote process (and it can be quite lengthy), just ask your installer whether Resin Bound Systems can be laid in any weather. If their answer is YES, run for the hills.
